GISCafe’s Sanjay Gangal conducted an interview with Dale Lutz, co-founder of Safe Software, at Autodesk University 2011 in Las Vegas, Nevada recently. Sanjay: Tell us about Safe Software. Dale: We have been in existence since 1993. We make a product called FME that moves data from where it is to where we want it to be. It now supports around 275 different formats.
Sanjay: So when you say you move data, do you mean translate data? Dale: That’s right, but while we’re moving it from one format to the next, we also can rearrange it and adjust the names of attributes or the way the geometry is structured, so what people get is exactly what they need. Sanjay: What are you showing here at the conference today? Dale: We’re wrapping up the release of FME 2012, and we’re showing it at the booth. It will be released in January, 2012. Sanjay: What are the primary features of FME 2012 that users will be interested in? Dale: The big thing is we added a lot to our point cloud or lidar support, and in particular the Oracle Spatial point cloud and the ability to chop up files with more than a billion points in them. Sanjay: Is there anything else you would like to add? Dale: Autodesk University is always valuable for us. For the mapping people, it is interesting to follow Autodesk Infrastructure Modeler which is a 3D product. We work with 3D formats in FME and are expanding that support in FME 2012. We’re looking at how we can support Infrastructure Modeler, perhaps by adding City GML import. In Europe there is a lot going on with 3D and CityGML. In FME 2012 we are improving our CityGML support.
