Group 1 Software's Geocoding Solution to Provide Enhanced Accuracy by Incorporating Point Data from Parcel and Building Maps

First Geocoding Point-Level Solution to Benefit Internet Mapping, Flood Hazard Determination, Property and Casualty Insurance, Telco and Utility Applications

SAN DIEGO, July 25 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Group 1 Software, Inc., a Pitney Bowes company (NYSE: PBI), today introduced the geocoding industry's first point-level solution, GeoStan(TM) Point-Level Option, which incorporates point data that locates addresses at the center of the actual building footprint or parcel. The GeoStan(TM) Point-Level Option provides enhanced geocoding accuracy with spatially enabled data for Internet mapping, flood hazard determination, property and casualty insurance, telecommunications and the utility industries. Group 1 introduced GeoStan(TM) Point-Level Option at the ESRI Worldwide User Conference, being held today through July 29, 2005 in San Diego, California (Group 1 booth #1301).

GeoStan(TM) is an application program interface that corrects, standardizes and geocodes address information. GeoStan(TM) provides a comprehensive set of address-level geocodes by combining USPS(R) postal data with spatial data files from leading data providers, including Tele Atlas, into a single unified data set. Enhanced by Tele Atlas data, the GeoStan(TM) Point-Level Option can locate millions of addresses at the building or parcel center point.

"Accuracy of a geocode is critical for many industries," said Steve Walden, vice president and general manager of Group 1's Centrus Division. "Differences of a few feet matter greatly in these applications. With GeoStan(TM) Point-Level Option, we now have the ability to 'put the point right on top of the house' in many cases."

Historically, geocoding was first performed at the ZIP code level, then ZIP +4, and more recently at the street segment level. With each evolutionary step, geocoding accuracy improved dramatically. With GeoStan(TM) Point-Level Option, positional accuracy is further enhanced. By providing the ability to locate an address at the center of a building or parcel, geocoding precision is improved by over 1000 feet in some cases.

"Tele Atlas has long set the standard for databases that offer the highest geocoding rates in the industry," said Mike Gerling, COO of Tele Atlas North America. "And now, with our address points product, we are pleased to bring an even higher level of geocoding accuracy and precision to the marketplace."

Group 1's GeoStan(TM) Point-Level Option is the company's latest "first" in its long list of business geographics and geocoding achievements, which include:

     * First national address-level geocoding system;

     * First CASS(R)-Certified geocoding system;

     * First multi-platform geocoding system;

     * First embedded spatial analysis engine;

     * First geocoding solution to incorporate LACS to update rural addressing
       to 911 (city-style) standards;

     * First national point-level geocoder.

"Group 1 continues to invest in technology development and advancements, such as those announced today to our business geographics solution suite," said Chris Baker, president, Group 1 Software. "GeoStan(TM) Point-Level Option is yet another 'first' that allows us to maintain our leadership position in the geocoding industry."

"We couldn't be more pleased than to have Group 1 bring this technology to the marketplace first," states John Cassidy, director of GIS markets for Tele Atlas. "The combination of Group1's geocoding technology and solutions and Tele Atlas' street databases continues to bring real value to our joint customers in the insurance, risk management, utilities, and government markets."

    The GeoStan(TM) Point-Level Option will be available in September 2005.
