Police Empower Communities in the Midwest

July 28, 2009—Law enforcement agencies in the Midwest have discovered the value of transparency and community oriented policing by sharing crime data with the public they serve. Duluth, Minnesota, Lincoln, Nebraska and Peoria, Illinois are all providing their communities with easy access to current information through CrimeMapping.com. The service allows residents to map out and report on crime activity near any address. Users are able to subscribe to Crime Alerts and receive updates when new crimes occur via e-mail. Law enforcement staff can also reach out to active citizens through the subscription service by sending out crime tips as well as bulletins.

The data posted represents a high level of accuracy as The Omega Group uses ESRI mapping technology to locate each incident by address and then converts the information to a format that is Google compatible. Emphasizing data integrity helps create a level of trust between the community being served and the agencies subscribing to the service. CrimeMapping.com has opened communication channels and provided a heightened sense of awareness for residents.

“CrimeMapping.com has proven itself to be a valuable tool for our new Neighborhood Watch program. Your "Crime Alerts" e-mails have allowed me to get detailed, timely crime data information out to all of our members. Our efforts are now focused and far more effective than they would have been without your program. Thanks!”
