Jennic Achieves ZigBee Compliant Platform (ZCP) Certification

Sheffield, UK, — May 21, 2009 — Sheffield based microcontroller manufacturer Jennic has gained ZigBee Compliant Platform (ZCP) certification on its recently announced JN5148 wireless microcontroller. The certification covers the JN5148 32-bit wireless microcontroller plus all of its module variants. Jennic’s in-house ZigBee stack development supports the ZigBee PRO feature set.

The JN5148 platform is the only single chip wireless microcontroller to include a 32-bit RISC CPU, a 256K memory map (128KB ROM, 128KB RAM) and with an active current of less than 18mA when transmitting or receiving data, enabling the device to operate from a coin cell battery without decreasing the battery’s life expectancy. It also integrates several digital and analogue peripherals, including a 4-input 12-bit analogue-to-digital converter, two 11-bit digital-to-analogue converters, a comparator, and a temperature sensor in a compact 56 pin 8x8mm, QFN package.

When asked about what this certification would mean for its customers, Jennic’s CEO Jim Lindop responded “Gaining this will allow the OEMs that engage with us to have full assurance that they have the correct building blocks needed to develop interoperable end products based on the ZigBee PRO feature set. The increased memory footprint and the better code efficiency of the JN5148 will allow our clients to implement larger and more complex applications to make full use of the 32-bit MCU performance”.

According to Paul Russell, managing director at the ZigBee Alliance recognised test house TRaC Telecoms and Radio, "We are very pleased to have been involved in the formal testing of the JN5148. Jennic have a big presence within the ZigBee community and so we were pleased to be able to assist with an effective testing cycle. With TRaC being based in the UK, we are happy to offer this testing service to fellow European companies."

The launch of the evaluation kit is planed for the end of June. The evaluation kit will include 1 display controller node, 4 sensor nodes, and a development toolchain integrated into the Eclipse IDE. The software package will contain the core ZigBee PRO stack libraries, the ZigBee Cluster Library, and a profile builder to initially support Home Automation and Smart Energy clusters.
