Achieving alignment between business and IT/GIS strategies has long been a rather challenging endeavor for most organizations. There was much interest in strategic alignment in the early 1990s as IT and GIS technologies became seen as an integral part of the enterprise. IT/GIS had moved from being an operational function to being a strategic tool that could enable the business functions of the organization. Recently, the Society of Information Management noted that the number one concern among executives was the alignment of business and IT. Despite this interest, they found that over 40% of executives of Fortune 500 companies in the US indicated that their business and IT strategies were not aligned. Overall, alignment of business strategy and IT/GIS strategy has remained and important organizational challenge that has plagued management for many years, and has long been recognized as a key issue for managers as IT/GIS has become strategically significant.
