The 5th GIS-focused algorithm competition, GISCUP 2016,
co-located with ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2016!!
Dates: October 31-November 3, 2016
Location: San Francisco, CA, USA

ACM SIGSPATIAL hosts an annual algorithm contest with the goal of encouraging innovation in a fun way.

The winners will be announced at the ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS conference in November 2016.

Contest participants will submit original computer programs to be evaluated by the contest organizers on a common dataset. This year’s contest will focus on applying spatial statistics to spatio-temporal big data in order to identify statistically significant hot spots using a distributed computing framework and functional programming languages. With the advent of the ubiquitous collection of spatio-temporal observational data (e.g., vehicle tracking data), the identification of unusual patterns of data in a statistically significant manner has become a key problem that numerous businesses and organizations are attempting to solve. This year’s SIGPSPATIAL Cup addresses this significant programming challenge.

Call for Submission: First ACM SIGSPATIAL Student Research Competition (SRC)
Date: October 31 - November 3, 2016

First ACM SIGSPATIAL Student Research Competition (SRC)
co-located with ACM SIGSPATIAL GIS 2016
October 31-November 3, 2016, San Francisco, CA, USA

Call for Submissions

For the first time, the ACM SIGSPATIAL 2016 will host the SIGSPATIAL ACM Student Research Competition (SRC). SRC allows undergraduate and graduate students to share their research results and exchange ideas with other students, judges, and conference attendees; understand the practical applications of their research; perfect their communication skills; and receive prizes and gain recognition from ACM and the greater computing community.

* Guidelines

The Student Research Competition is open to graduate (only one author) and undergraduate (up to two authors per contribution) student members whose submissions are accepted by the SRC committee. SRC submissions should describe recent research conducted primarily by students or a recent development that involves a substantial amount of work achieved primarily by students. To be considered, complete a submission of an extended abstract of a topic of interest to the ACM SIGSPATIAL conference (please check the main conference CFP for relevant topics) and indicate the level of the participation (undergraduate or graduate). Valid ACM student membership and student status enrollment as of the submission deadline are required for the lead student.

* Awards

Selected competitors by the SRC committee will receive up to $500 USD for their conference travel, depending on need. Winners from each category will advance to the SRC Grand Finals, where winners from various ACM SIGs are evaluated to nominate the ACM-wide SRC winners. The winners of the Grand Finals will be recognized at the Annual ACM Awards Banquet, the same banquet that also recognizes the Turing Award winners.

* Sponsors

The SRC competition is fully sponsored by a generous donation from Microsoft Research.

* Submission Instructions

Each submission should include the author(s)' name(s), affiliations, email addresses, research advisors' names, ACM student member number, SRC category (undergraduate or graduate), and an extended abstract of no more than two pages in the conference template. Webinar: What a complete GIS solution means for Gas Distribution companies
Date: November 9, 2016
Place: MA USA

The industry is full of organizations that have had to “redo” parts of their enterprise distribution platform so that it can address the business goals and meet regulatory requirements. GIS is part of this. Yet, GIS isn’t a single tool. It is a series of individual products that are pieced together to form a platform for addressing business needs. Those who have reviewed Esri’s “Arc-soup” understand. Many utilities have the goal to implement a powerful, easy to use platform that quickly delivers on business needs. However, operators are faced with the challenge to know what are the right products to implement, when to implement them, and who to seek help from?

Join Novara as we discuss how distribution utilities can take an Esri based, scalable, platform to successfully meet their design, as-built, asset management, compliance, field and DIMP business needs. Its can be run from internal servers or a utility can opt to have it hosted externally. Participants will learn about how the foundation of this solution, Esri’s ArcGIS suite and the UPDM data model work together seamlessly. Learn how to set the implementation schedule up to be completed all at once or over time so as to work with your budget.  Participants will learn how they can use this platform to address the utilities engineering, and compliance requirements inside of the corporate IT structure.

Join us on Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 1:00pm (EST)/11:00am (MST)/10:00am (PST) to learn about how leveraging a proven Gas Distribution Platform can improve decision-making but also lower infrastructure risk.

With Novara’s Distribution platform you can:
• Design new service and trunk lines and import as-built records
• Take information into the field and update your records
• Calculate your Risk and improve your DIMP plan
• Communicate and provide transparency to stakeholders and executives
• Generate maps and produce digital and paper mapbooks

FROM IMAGERY TO MAP: digital photogrammetric technologies
Date: November 13 - 17, 2016
Place: Agra, India

The geographical map is one of the major advancements that man has developed over thousands of years. We have come a long way from Ptolemy’s maps to have our modern-day, precise, digital maps. Over time, many ways of obtaining of spatial information have been created and developed.

More than 150 years have passed since the day French inventor Gaspard-Félix Tournachon took a photograph of Paris from an air balloon. This photograph started the phenomenon of remote sensing, which rapidly developed in the twentieth century and has continued to evolve in the twenty-first century.
