Not a wilderness navigation "How To" book!
The first sentence of the book's Introduction states: 'You may have guessed from the title that this book is about GPS and maps'. Actually the title does not hint that this book is so heavily about maps, but rather about GPS (the word map is not in the title). In fact this book seems to be more about maps and downloading maps than anything else. Sure, maps have their place when discussing GPS, but the author goes too deep and spends too much time on maps for a "Dummies" book. If you are really into maps, mapping programs, mapping freeware, etc; or just want to learn about GPS in generalities, then you will find a lot of good information in this book. In contrast, how to actually USE the GPS receivers is vague, unless you just intend to use auto GPS. Yes, some attention is also given to the use of automotive GPS receivers and even geocaching is addressed to a degree, but many other important facets of navigating with a GPS receiver are only touched upon. If you want to learn the 'nuts and bolts' of actually navigating in the wilds with a handheld GPS receiver, (with or without map and compass) you should look elsewhere. In a nutshell; to me it's as if the author has waded too deep into some aspects of GPS and has had to gloss over some other important aspects to get it all to fit in the pages. I feel ripped-off by this purchase.
