Seeing a Better World™ in Africa

August 29th, 2013 by Andre Kearns

Africa is a part of the world with unique opportunities and challenges; many regions are experiencing rapid economic growth, while others are limited by geopolitical instability. With this in mind, DigitalGlobe recently launched an Africa Microsite to showcase how our work across the continent is helping governments, companies and NGOs to see a better world in Africa.

Using our insight capabilities, geospatial analysis, geographic information surveys and Africa global basemap, our goal is to help decision-makers better understand change across the continent.  We plan to accomplish this using three primary capabilities:

High resolution earth imagery: DigitalGlobe owns and operates the world’s largest high resolution satellite constellation.  We collect 60 percent of the world’s land mass in imagery every 30 days.  Our growing imagery archive recently surpassed 4 billion square kilometers, and we have collected more than 30 million square kilometers across the continent of Africa, primarily within the last 12 months.

Analyst-ready geospatial information: This year DigitalGlobe began developing comprehensive, country-by-country human geography datasets.  These datasets – created across categories like communications, demographics, economy, religion, ethnicity and language – describe in detail the human fabric of a specific country. To date, we have developed datasets for 30 countries in total and half of them are in Africa.

Deep Insight: Although DigitalGlobe may best be known for having the world’s largest satellite constellation, we are equally proud of our strong heritage in advanced geospatial analytics.  Our team of analysts collectively represents close to 250 years of experience within the intelligence community and in predictive analytics.  Across Africa, we have completed extensive work predicting the extremist activity of Boko Haram in Nigeria, the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA) in Central Africa and al-Shabaab in Southern Somalia.

So why Africa?   The African continent has some of the fastest growing economies in the world, but its challenging social and political issues have slowed its ability to achieve maximum economic growth.  DigitalGlobe is interested in helping African nations see a better world by enabling it, through information, to solve existing challenges, unlock its full growth potential and dramatically improve the quality of life for all people living across the continent.

Our ultimate goal is to become the authoritative, indispensable source of information on a rapidly changing world for governments, companies and non-profits.  DigitalGlobe is uniquely positioned to accomplish this through the strength of our assets and expertise.

We encourage you to visit the African microsite, as well as our contact us page for more information, or to learn about DigitalGlobe’s vision to by 2020, be the indispensable source of information about our changing planet.
