Rise in Geospatial ‘Big Data’ Calls for Solutions for Managing Information Overload

As an industry buzzword, ‘Big Data’ has reached near ubiquity in nearly every sector, which is completely justified because large amounts of data have become a driving force for any large enterprise.

But just how big is ‘Big Data’?  If we look at the numbers, it can be quite astounding – reinforcing both the challenge and value of leveraging data.

For example, there are 2.7 Zetabytes of data exist in the digital universe today.  In one month, the Library of Congress collected 35 Terabytes of data. Consumer technology giants like Facebook store, accesses, and analyze 30+ Petabytes of user-generated data.  In addition, IDC estimates that by 2020, business transactions on the Internet will reach 450 billion per day.

In the geospatial sector, remote sensing growth has created an overwhelming amount of data, which makes it challenging for larger enterprises and government agencies to harness and analyze this data for effective decision-making.  The defense and intelligence arenas have dealt with this for years, and the rise of Full Motion Video (FMV) and UAV data has further compounded this challenge.

In an era where real-time data is paramount for enhanced decision-making, organizations are now required to provide faster end-to-end delivery of geospatial imagery while still effectively managing the exponential growth in storage requirements, user demand and performance expectations.

Even with next-generation data management solutions, managing and delivering large volume geospatial imagery remains problematic for our customers.

Thankfully, the Intergraph Enhanced Compressed Wavelet (ECW) wavelet compression format has undergone a generational transformation to keep up with these new trends for managing massive volumes of imagery – allowing our customers to tackle any imagery “Big Data” challenge.

Our ECW technology compresses terabyte-sized imagery files to five percent of their original size, while still retaining full image quality and lightning-fast display performance. This optimized compression technology enables faster processing and transfer of imagery throughout an organization, reducing data duplication, storage costs and making data more accessible for end-users due to format portability.
