Big Data Management: Handling GIS Feature Data with ERDAS APOLLO 2014

Each day, organizations are dealing with more and more geospatial  data. Similarly, the variety and size of the data available is also increasing. Geospatial data within an organization commonly includes massive stores of imagery, basemaps, 3D point clouds (LIDAR), feature data, as well as volumes of other unstructured business data. This data is big – and needs to be made available inside and outside the organization, often across multiple departments, and delivered to different client applications on a variety of platforms and devices.

Hexagon Geospatial offers a strategy for cataloging, managing and delivering geospatial data and processes via Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards and protocols.  Throughout the market, there has been a gap when it comes to real Vector Data Management – until now.

As part of our new Geospatial 2014 portfolio release, the role of ERDAS APOLLO as the comprehensive, enterprise data catalog has been expanded to provide optimized workflows for unstructured vector data and other business data (documents, movies, photos, etc.). Already the industry-leading technology for handling big imagery data, ERDAS APOLLO is now a vector data management solution as well. One single crawler harvests, catalogs and publishes all heterogeneous data types. Besides viewing vector data in an application, ERDAS APOLLO 2014 also enables users with proper permissions to select and download original vector datasets.

Managing large numbers of vector files, collecting necessary metadata about each file, and bringing all of that information into a catalog scheme must be as automatic as possible. The new ERDAS APOLLO Data Manager can setup automatic discovery functions to catalog the data. It can then be used to efficiently update other pertinent information that cannot be retrieved automatically.

With the implementation of the ERDAS APOLLO 2014 system, any organization can be better prepared to manage large collections of vector data, as well as imagery and other business data.  This capability will help save time finding data based on location, project number and date.  Distribution and viewing of data is simplified with the use of WMS and download capabilities, and organizations will now have full control of their data holdings through an advanced security mechanism.
