From June 3rd through 6th, Hexagon is hosting its HxGN LIVE 2013 — Hexagon International Conference, which will provide outstanding training, networking, visionary keynote addresses and much more.

During major mining efforts, knowing how much earth has been removed from a quarry or mine can significantly enhance overall project management. Organizations need to be able to provide accurate measurements and reporting to ensure that the project is aligning with overall goals, as well as complies with current mining regulations.
In addition, organizations that store landscape or construction materials, such as gravel, sand or dirt, need to measure and analyze how much their surplus is being used at all times.
On April 30th, Intergraph is hosting a webinar called “Easy Volumetric Measurements Using Geospatial Technology,” which will guide users through a workflow for determining overall earth removal.
During this webinar, we will guide you through a workflow that enables you to determine how much earth has been removed from a quarry or mine. Likewise, this workflow could also be used by anyone who stores landscaping or constructions materials (such as gravel, sand, or dirt).

Leveraging geospatial data for various purposes across large, disparate organizations that span an entire country is a tremendous challenge especially when geospatial data ownership is decentralized across states. Along with understanding how to share the data effectively, different departments within different agencies need to access and process data in a variety of ways. Organizing and keeping data up-to-date across jurisdictions, while delivering that data in a common way and timely manner are all crucial factors in enabling national agencies and departments to make smarter decisions.
Intergraph was recently awarded a project to help one of Europe’s leading electricity and gas companies to organize and manage geospatial data for the entire country of Germany. Data covering more than 365,000 km² of land area is managed by this program and project specifications required keeping all mapping data up-to-date along with rapid delivery of the data to a variety of regional organizations.
Other important project requirements included:
- Usage of geospatial data services in low-bandwidth and offline networks to meet local and third party needs
- Reliability of the services to meet 24×7 demand
- Ability to serve a heterogeneous GIS environment with multiple end-user systems

Last month, Intergraph held its annual Transportation Summit, which was a key stop on our 2013 Geospatial World Tour. The event highlighted how Intergraph is advancing new geospatial solutions for this unique sector by enabling transportation agencies to better track and monitor the location, condition, and other important information about roadway assets.
At the event, we shared insights into how eight transportation agencies have recently signed on as customers to use the new GeoMedia Smart Client solution, which enables users to seamlessly integrate geographic changes into configurable workflows — along with providing field/mobile users with an intuitive GIS environment with both on- and off-line editing capabilities.
Intergraph also announced the growing number of DOT’s using its GeoMedia Transportation Manager software for managing their roadway networks. More DOT’s and transportation agencies use Intergraph’s GeoMedia Transportation Manager to manage their road networks than any other software in the world. Along with many U.S. DOT’s, the Ministry of Transportation in Ontario, who has the busiest highway in North America, uses GeoMedia Transportation Manager.

Throughout the remote sensing industry, there is a growing awareness and interest for radar imagery.
From military intelligence and homeland security organizations to emergency responders, fisheries and offshore oil production providers, a wide range of organizations are rapidly expanding their use of radar imagery in new and innovative ways.
When we launched the Intergraph Geospatial 2013 earlier this year, we developed new enhancements that will allow these kinds of organizations to fully leverage radar capabilities.
For example, as a part of ERDAS IMAGINE 2013, the Radar Analyst Workstation is a fully interactive workstation specifically tailored to the day-to-day operational requirements of a radar analyst.
IMAGINE Radar Analyst Workstation provides capabilities that enable easier, more thorough use of radar data resources. The workstation is presented in the ribbon interface and includes tools to complete a variety of workflows, accurately and completely, with relatively little radar expertise. The interactive dynamic tools complete tasks such as flood mapping and oil spill detection with one button creation of vector output and reports. Users can also easily access the marine traffic website, correlating live ship tracking data with your analysis results.

For any police department, the ability to access, share and act upon the right data is critical for saving lives. Much of this data is geospatially enabled to allow police forces to see precisely where activity is occurring and what type of response is taking place.
The New Zealand Police are deploying smartphones and tablets featuring Intergraph’s new Mobile Responder app to more than 6,000 frontline officers.
Linked to Intergraph’s industry-leading computer-aided dispatch software (I/CAD), the Mobile Responder app will help New Zealand field officers use smartphones to access critical information required for more informed decision-making.
In announcing this effort, the Prime Minister of New Zealand said that the mobile technologies would help police “access vital information that will help them prevent crime, catch criminals and protect New Zealanders.”
And this effort will have other significant benefits. For example, the New Zealand Police estimate that officers will now spend more time in the field, reducing significant amounts of paperwork and increasing productivity by 30 minutes per shift. This amounts to 520,000 hours each year or $304.8 million (NZD ) in productivity savings over 12 years.

The environmental impacts of wind farm development are always a major consideration when countries are exploring these alternative energy sources. Wind farms tend to be ideally suited for expansive regions and coastlines where wildlife is abundant. While a good alternative source of energy, they are not without their impacts to the animal populations in those areas.
The United Kingdom is currently the world leader in offshore wind power generation. Many UK organizations are already using geospatial solutions and imagery analysis for ecosystem monitoring. Understanding environmental impacts on any change is a vital step in moving forward with energy solutions. For one such project, a leading environmental consultancy in the UK is monitoring bird populations living in areas developed for wind power generation. This organization specializes in freshwater and marine ecology assessment.
Using a proprietary algorithm for identifying and enumerating birds from aerial photographs, the organization has already collected tens of thousands of images in a single project survey. Thus far, they have amassed over 87 terabytes of aerial photography.

Public Works departments manage and keep track of massive amounts of geospatial data. This includes a broad range of information, from digging permits, to inspecting, maintaining and updating a wide variety of assets (fire hydrants, manholes, pipes, street furniture and even buildings themselves).
To effectively manage and leverage this data for smarter decision-making, these organizations require flexible, web-based GIS solutions. Advanced geospatial functionality must be balanced with intuitive applications, enabling both subject matter experts and non-GIS-trained personnel to collaborate on work benefiting the public. Ultimately, these solutions enable departments to configure and deploy easy-to-use, map-based, task-oriented web applications.

The need to scale geospatial data production capabilities continues to increase, as technologies once segmented become integrated. Large organizations need to react to rapid global changes with smart decision-making. This requires advanced remote sensing analysis and spatial modeling to make data truly actionable.
Intergraph recently launched ERDAS IMAGINE 2013 as part of the Intergraph Geospatial Portfolio 2013. ERDAS IMAGINE equips users to create new information by visualizing results in 2D, 3D, movies, and on cartographic-quality map compositions.
This release expands sensor support and offers a wide array of new features, including a suite of tools for handing point clouds and a next-generation spatial modeler.
The new point cloud suite enables users to simultaneously view point clouds in 2D and 3D and user defined profiles as well as providing advanced editing and analysis capabilities.
