Educational institutions often play a key role in developing the GIS research and insights for allowing any nation to be better prepared to handle natural disasters.
In addition, with natural disasters on the rise, many countries are looking to both enhance their overall planning efforts, as well as better leverage geospatial technologies in ways that increase overall response efforts – with the ultimate goal being more lives saved.
Intergraph recently announced that Kavala Institute of Technology’s Department of Forestry and Management of Natural Environment is doing precisely this for the country of Greece.
The educational institution is using Intergraph®’s ERDAS APOLLO 2013 for the management, analysis and delivery of geospatial data for disaster response in Greece.
Working closely with Intergraph’s channel partner in Greece, Geosystems Hellas, the Kavala Institute is collecting and cataloguing digital material in a spatial data infrastructure to support the detection, prevention and management of natural disasters. It is also leveraging the exploitation and visualization capabilities of free web services from international certified organizations.

Last year, we showcased a story of how the Netherlands-based, Dotka Data maintains a large and growing collection of historical aerial photography and maps, reflecting more than 200 years of history, and how it had selected ERDAS APOLLO to manage this data in conjunction with an exciting new e-commerce project.
Through this partnership, Dotka is working with the Dutch newspaper AD to offer its readers an opportunity to view current and 50-year old aerial photographs of their own homes.
As such, customers who maintain a subscription or purchase three newspapers have been granted access to a website enabling them to geocode their addresses to locate the relevant imagery, zoom in and out to view the details of their home and surrounding geography and order a free set of aerial images of their homes from 1960 and 2011.

Leveraging geospatial data for various purposes across large, disparate organizations that span an entire country is a tremendous challenge especially when geospatial data ownership is decentralized across states. Along with understanding how to share the data effectively, different departments within different agencies need to access and process data in a variety of ways. Organizing and keeping data up-to-date across jurisdictions, while delivering that data in a common way and timely manner are all crucial factors in enabling national agencies and departments to make smarter decisions.
Intergraph was recently awarded a project to help one of Europe’s leading electricity and gas companies to organize and manage geospatial data for the entire country of Germany. Data covering more than 365,000 km² of land area is managed by this program and project specifications required keeping all mapping data up-to-date along with rapid delivery of the data to a variety of regional organizations.
Other important project requirements included:
- Usage of geospatial data services in low-bandwidth and offline networks to meet local and third party needs
- Reliability of the services to meet 24×7 demand
- Ability to serve a heterogeneous GIS environment with multiple end-user systems

The environmental impacts of wind farm development are always a major consideration when countries are exploring these alternative energy sources. Wind farms tend to be ideally suited for expansive regions and coastlines where wildlife is abundant. While a good alternative source of energy, they are not without their impacts to the animal populations in those areas.
The United Kingdom is currently the world leader in offshore wind power generation. Many UK organizations are already using geospatial solutions and imagery analysis for ecosystem monitoring. Understanding environmental impacts on any change is a vital step in moving forward with energy solutions. For one such project, a leading environmental consultancy in the UK is monitoring bird populations living in areas developed for wind power generation. This organization specializes in freshwater and marine ecology assessment.
Using a proprietary algorithm for identifying and enumerating birds from aerial photographs, the organization has already collected tens of thousands of images in a single project survey. Thus far, they have amassed over 87 terabytes of aerial photography.

Most nations warehouse a treasure trove of historic aerial photography and maps that provide the foundation for tracking significant changes over time. In addition to providing a historical perspective on land and development changes, this data is also very relevant for citizens who want to see how their places of residence have changed over time.
In the Netherlands, Dotka Data maintains a large and growing collection of historical aerial photography and maps, reflecting more than 200 years of history. The collection includes topographic maps from as far back as 1798, and aerial photographs taken for topological purposes from 1932 to current day.

Utility companies work with many kinds of geospatial data including LiDAR and imagery, and must efficiently manage and update asset information as well as their land base. In addition, these companies are faced with environmental and safety mandates, which results in volumes of land use inspections, photos, field analysis and surveys that also need to be managed along with geospatial data.
Utilities companies need to be able to create value added data products, manage this information and get access to it when needed – for real-time decision-making.
