A Unique Challenge for All Future Geospatial Leaders

The geospatial sector is comprised of some of the most innovative thinkers, solving the most pressing governmental and businesses challenges. A key part of nurturing this culture of ingenuity is teaching and inspiring the next generation of geospatial leaders.

Intergraph is embarking on an ambitious effort to cultivate creativity amongst students with our inaugural Geospatial Challenge.  The challenge will allow students to flex their problem solving skills using Intergraph’s innovations.

As such, we are calling on students who are participating in Intergraph’s Global Education Program, Intergraph U, to submit an abstract describing the scope of a problem, their geographical area of interest, and the dataset(s) and Intergraph solution(s) used.

Demystify the Point Cloud – So Much More Than a Surface Model

The annual Hexagon conference provides the unique opportunity to showcase our latest innovations to nearly 4,000 users.  While many of our sessions focus on product training, we also provide key insights into new innovations and unlock key secrets that allow our users to fully leverage geospatial data.

While there is increasing adoption of point cloud data, many users struggle to fully integrate this new content in their workflows. An important realization is that point clouds are much more than simple surface models – and should be treated as such. The difficulty lies in fully exploiting the depth of information that can be derived from point cloud content.

On Monday, June 3rd during HxGN LIVE 2013, we will be providing a unique training session that will offer more clarity around how to best leverage point clouds:

Demystifying the Point Cloud: So Much More Than a Surface Model (4 hrs)

For years, the adoption of point cloud data has grown tremendously. This course is designed to take you beyond the basics of point cloud data and teach you how to get the most out of this incredibly rich data source. Learn about the various types of point cloud data created and exploited by Hexagon products – from traditional airborne LiDAR, to the growing power of terrestrial laser scanners from Leica Geosystems, to the photogrammetric true ortho point clouds created by Semi-Global Matching in ImageStation®. We will demonstrate 3D and profile visualization and measurement of all these point cloud data types, as well as perform editing, classification, and exploitation of point cloud data in GIS and remote sensing software like GeoMedia® and ERDAS IMAGINE.

Cloud-Based Geospatial Data Management Solution Helps Map Entire Country of Germany

Leveraging geospatial data for various purposes across large, disparate organizations that span an entire country is a tremendous challenge especially when geospatial data ownership is decentralized across states.   Along with understanding how to share the data effectively, different departments within different agencies need to access and process data in a variety of ways.   Organizing and keeping data up-to-date across jurisdictions, while delivering that data in a common way and timely manner are all crucial factors in enabling national agencies and departments to make smarter decisions.

Intergraph was recently awarded a project to help one of Europe’s leading electricity and gas companies to organize and manage geospatial data for the entire country of Germany.  Data covering more than 365,000 km² of land area is managed by this program and project specifications required keeping all mapping data up-to-date along with rapid delivery of the data to a variety of regional organizations.

Other important project requirements included:

  • Usage of geospatial data services in low-bandwidth and offline networks to meet local and third party needs
  • Reliability of the services to meet 24×7 demand
  • Ability to serve a heterogeneous GIS environment with multiple end-user systems

Organizations Can Now Maximize the Potential of Radar Imagery

Throughout the remote sensing industry, there is a growing awareness and interest for radar imagery.

From military intelligence and homeland security organizations to emergency responders, fisheries and offshore oil production providers, a wide range of organizations are rapidly expanding their use of radar imagery in new and innovative ways.

When we launched the Intergraph Geospatial 2013 earlier this year, we developed new enhancements that will allow these kinds of organizations to fully leverage radar capabilities.

For example, as a part of ERDAS IMAGINE 2013, the Radar Analyst Workstation is a fully interactive workstation  specifically tailored to the day-to-day operational requirements of a radar analyst.

IMAGINE Radar Analyst Workstation provides capabilities that enable easier, more thorough use of radar data resources.  The workstation is presented in the ribbon interface and includes tools to complete a variety of workflows, accurately and completely, with relatively little radar expertise. The interactive dynamic tools complete tasks such as flood mapping and oil spill detection with one button creation of vector output and reports. Users can also easily access the marine traffic website, correlating live ship tracking data with your analysis results.

Ecosystem Monitoring Around Wind Farm Development

The environmental impacts of wind farm development are always a major consideration when countries are exploring these alternative energy sources.  Wind farms tend to be ideally suited for expansive regions and coastlines where wildlife is abundant. While a good alternative source of energy, they are not without their impacts to the animal populations in those areas.

The United Kingdom is currently the world leader in offshore wind power generation.  Many UK organizations are already using geospatial solutions and imagery analysis for ecosystem monitoring.  Understanding environmental impacts on any change is a vital step in moving forward with energy solutions. For one such project, a leading environmental consultancy in the UK is monitoring bird populations living in areas developed for wind power generation. This organization specializes in freshwater and marine ecology assessment.

Using a proprietary algorithm for identifying and enumerating birds from aerial photographs, the organization has already collected tens of thousands of images in a single project survey.   Thus far, they have amassed over 87 terabytes of aerial photography.

Advanced Remote Sensing Analysis and Spatial Modeling Capabilities with ERDAS IMAGINE 2013

The need to scale geospatial data production capabilities continues to increase, as technologies once segmented become integrated. Large organizations need to react to rapid global changes with smart decision-making.   This requires advanced remote sensing analysis and spatial modeling to make data truly actionable.

Intergraph recently launched ERDAS IMAGINE 2013 as part of the Intergraph Geospatial Portfolio 2013.  ERDAS IMAGINE equips users to create new information by visualizing results in 2D, 3D, movies, and on cartographic-quality map compositions.

This release expands sensor support and offers a wide array of new features, including a suite of tools for handing point clouds and a next-generation spatial modeler.

The new point cloud suite enables users to simultaneously view point clouds in 2D and 3D and user defined profiles as well as providing advanced editing and analysis capabilities.

Intergraph LPS 2013: Photogrammetry & Remote Sensing Integrated

Let’s face it: photogrammetric systems are not known for being user-friendly.  As a result, trained professionals are often required to manage the full spectrum of a photogrammetry system’s capabilities. Fostering a silo within organizations, this can limit the power of this type of data, and its ability to be leveraged easily in other geospatial genres.  Recognizing the power of photogrammetry, more organizations are now analyzing airborne, satellite imagery as well as UAV and oblique imagery for smarter decision-making.

Fortunately, as part of the new Intergraph Geospatial Portfolio 2013, we have launched LPS 2013, a powerful and modern photogrammetry system. Removing Barriers to Effective Geoportal Creation

Over the past several years, we have seen a rising demand for spatial data infrastructure (SDI) services, which has also been fueled by legislation mandating that public bodies publish geospatial data for enhanced collaboration with partners and customers.

Web applications provide a means for making geospatial data available for public consumption. These applications act as clients for SDI services, which are also used for developing more advanced enterprise portal.   To meet this need, Intergraph Geospatial Portfolio 2013 includes Geospatial Portal 2013.

Geospatial Portal 2013 removes the barriers associated with typical geoportal creation. Its powerful browser application allows users to visualize and share accurate geospatial data to collaborate with government agencies, commercial businesses, and the public.
