Over the past several years, we have seen a rising demand for spatial data infrastructure (SDI) services, which has also been fueled by legislation mandating that public bodies publish geospatial data for enhanced collaboration with partners and customers.

Today’s organizations are more progressive in the way they tap into geospatial solutions for driving smarter decisions. And, as we have highlighted before, the key to being a forward-thinking organization is by being able to empower a large base of users that work between rigid desktop GIS and light-weight browser-based GIS systems.
Intergraph Geospatial 2013 includes a new version of GeoMedia Smart Client. Earlier this year, Joe Francica from Directions Magazine made the following statement about this significant offering:
“I found it to be more intuitive than most “lightweight” client interfaces that try to sell themselves as “robust” GIS solutions. … Organizations wishing to deploy GIS to a broader set of users should investigate Smart Client.”
GeoMedia Smart Client engages all users across an organization, enabling them to seamlessly integrate geographic changes into configurable workflows.
The new release provides noteworthy improvements, outlined in an on-demand webinar. These enhancements include the ability for users to make updates with waning or non-existent Internet connectivity, which is a challenge for organizations with a distributed workforce out in the field. Thankfully, these employees remain productive as changes are uploaded upon connectivity again through a process that is seamless to the user experience.
In addition, the new release will allow for project-based conflict handling that can be added through the workflow definitions. Other new features include ERDAS APOLLO Essentials integration, workflow manager API enhancements and support for geographic coordinates and custom coordinate systems.
The new offering will be available in three product tiers, depending on each organization’s need:

- GeoMedia Smart Client Advantage
- GeoMedia Smart Client Professional
Overall, GeoMedia Smart Client will further allow end-users to leverage advanced geospatial functionality via simple-to-use map-based tools, streamlining their processes and honing their expertise. As a result, vibrant geospatial business workflows provide a level of sophistication not traditionally supported by legacy out-of-the-box horizontal software products.

Effectively sharing geospatial data inside and outside an organization seems like an easy task given the vast number of offerings that exist today. However, truly leveraging the best of breed information technologies, integrating different genres of geospatial, while leveraging powerful desktop applications continues to be a challenge. Many of today’s offerings hone in one area of expertise, while neglecting other user requirements, thereby failing to provide a cohesive, holistic geospatial server solution. The end result may then alienate or frustrate some stakeholders, ultimately prolonging or even impeding decision-making capabilities.

Point clouds provide a wealth of geospatial information required for fast and effective decision-making. Though the process of extracting the data can be cumbersome and time consuming, often resulting in the data being unused or irrelevant.
With data essentially overflowing, it is becoming more difficult for end-users to manage, distribute, exploit, and visualize their point data from the desktop through to the server and over to the world.

As most geospatial organizations need to use and distribute high volumes of geospatial data, disparate legacy information systems often hinder the ability to actually do this effectively.
As many of you know firsthand, various departments within an organization may use different geospatial software and data formats. Ultimately, this often results in data silos that form obstacles to effective collaboration within the enterprise.
