Checking out the whole fleet with WEBFLEET Mobile Smartphone App

December 7th, 2011 by Susan Smith

Recently TomTom introduced the WEBFLEET Mobile Smartphone App, which gives an overarching view of a customer’s fleet to the PC in the office. This can be accessed on any device from anywhere drawing data from the cloud and is particularly useful to small business owners. In an interview with Michael Geffroy, Vice President of Sales, North America for TomTom Business Solutions, he outlined the exciting features of WEBFLEET:

GISVoice: How does this app differ from TomTom’s previous fleet applications?

This is really an extension of an important product — WEBFLEET — which
delivers an overarching view of a customer’s fleet to the PC in the office. It
allows our customers to manage their fleet, dispatch, follow the status of a
particular job, know where their workers are at any given time, and access HD
traffic for routing individual drivers. Now, just by downloading WEBFLEET
Mobile to their iPhone or Android device, they can access the very same data no
matter where they are. For small business owners, who are working to serve
their customers 24 hours a day, this application makes their lives much easier.

GISVoice: Is it available as connected as well as disconnected?

All the customer needs is a data connection — whether its Wifi, 3G or 4G, if
they can connect to the internet with their device, they can access real-time
data on their fleet.

GISVoice: How is the app able to work cross platform?

The data customers want to access resides in the cloud — the app provides a
user interface that helps them to access and act upon the data. So by
developing apps for iPhone and Android, we’re able to provide access to fleet
data on the most widely-used mobile platforms.

When they are in the office, they access that data via WEBFLEET on the
PC. The mobile application extends that experience to their smartphones when
they are on the move.

GISVoice: Will be used on iPads as well?

It does currently work on the iPad.

GISVoice: Has any ROI been noted by fleet managers who are using a beta version, for example?

Fleet managers report increased access, and visibility into their fleet
operations. And they are saving money and better managing their staff through
features like the ability to set geographical zones and receive alerts if
drivers go outside those zones. They are also improving communication with
their drivers since the app allows them to send text messages directly to a
driver’s TomTom device in the vehicle. Although we don’t have direct ROI
numbers yet, we have seen more than 20 percent of our business customer base
download the app within the first month of its availability.
