Google Maps helpful with Hurricane Sandy relief

November 6th, 2012 by Susan Smith

Google released a “Superstorm Sandy” CrisisMap on Oct. 25 some days before Hurricane Sandy made landfall, complete with roadwork advisories, fuel inventory statuses, power outage information and more.

The tool was created by Google’s Crisis Response team, an organization that formed after Hurricane Katrina created devastation in the southern states in 2005. This group has also responded to past disasters, such as the U.S. wildfires in the summer of 2012 and the Japan tsunami in early 2011. It would seem obvious that Google Maps would be more effective during this current crisis than Apple Maps, since that product has only just been introduced.
