StreetMapper surveys for the California DOT

November 16th, 2012 by Susan Smith

The California Department of Transportation (DOT) consulting to Caltrans, is using StreetMapper to survey more than 7,000 bridges in California. StreetMapper is a mobile mapping system that in this case is being used by survey technology company Terrametrix who was contracted by Caltrans to do the survey.

Terrametrix collects survey grade measurements using vehicle mounted  lasers. The use of StreetMapper makes it possible for Terrametrix to capture as-built data of existing infrastructure which saves time and money over traditional survey methods.

In particular, StreetMapper is very useful for bridge height surveys, according to the press release, because it offers relative positional accuracies of better than 0.02’  in raw data.
