ABI Research reports rise in cellular GNSS IC revenue

May 28th, 2014 by Susan Smith

The GNSS IC market continues to go from strength to strength with Cellular GNSS IC revenue alone forecast to break $2 billon by 2016, with a host of secondary markets starting to emerge, according to a report by ABI Research. This may help to explain why both Intel and Samsung have recently acquired GNSS IC design capabilities, creating competition for incumbents like Broadcom, Qualcomm and Mediatek.

Wearables, in-store advertising, ambient intelligence, IoE/IoT and connected homes have created a buzz around indoor location. Before indoor location can really happen, however, GNSS is critical to tying together the disparate networks.

Senior analyst, Patrick Connolly says, “Indoor location will be a significant enabler for GNSS, driving growth in both commercial and personal asset tracking, the connected home and fitness/health. We also see consumer GNSS IC OEMs adopting sub-meter precision technologies, such as u-Blox’s PPP technology, which will open up markets around UAVs, machine control, timing and synchronization, ADAS and the driverless car, etc. As a result, total GNSS IC revenues are set to hit $2.75 Billion in 2019.”

Additionally automotive location-enabled products such as the connected car, insurance, infotainment, safety, telematics and diagnostics will spur the increase in the adoption of GNSS. Satellite constellations such as GLONASS and Galileo will become mandated in the future for emergency calling and response for automotive applications.

These findings are part of ABI Research’s Location Devices Market Research.
