Juniper Systems Announces Allegro 3 and Archer 3 Rugged Handheld Computers for Field Professionals

May 10th, 2019 by Susan Smith

BIRMINGHAM, UK company, Juniper Systems Limited  announced the release of two new rugged handheld computers, each the third generation in their respective product lines. The new Allegro 3™ Rugged Handheld Computer is designed for applications requiring full alpha-numeric keyboard input, while the new Archer 3™ Rugged Handheld Computer is ideal for single-handed data entry use. Both products were designed for data-intensive applications and are now running on the Android® operating system.

Jeff Delatore, Juniper Systems’ product manager for Allegro and Archer, saying of the computers:  “they have all of the features you love, now on an upgraded platform. It’s still rugged. It still fits comfortably in your hand. Fans of the Allegro will be really happy because it’s faster now and runs on an operating system that’s beginning to modernize the data collection industry.”

Who are your customers for these rugged handheld computers?

The customers of these computers are people that generally work outdoors and need to capture alphanumeric data.  The use cases are vast and extend to many industries throughout the world: forestry, natural resources management, geophysical measurements, oil and gas exploration, construction, surveying, mining, and oceanic research, to name a few.

Are there other rugged handhelds on the market that provide the features of the Allegro 3 and Archer 3?

There aren’t many rugged handheld computers running Android in the market that have tactile keypads. Some of our key, best-in-class features are long battery life, outdoor viewable display, and ergonomics.

Archer 3

What are the upgrades of the platform?

Our products are customizable and built-to-order so end users don’t have to pay for features they don’t need, and so they get the right tool for their job.  Our products have options for choosing whether they want features like GNSS, cellular, and integrated 1D2D barcode. For customers with job specific needs, we have done custom developments to include market specific sensors, antennas, and connectors.

What are the dimensions of the new handhelds?

Allegro 3:  5.4” (“ = inches) w x 10.2” l x 1.6” d (138 mm x 256 mm x 40 mm)

Archer 3:  3.6” w x 7.25” l x 1.5”d (91 mm x 184 mm x 38 mm)

Why was would people choose a handheld computer over a tablet or other larger device for field work?

Battery life, ease of carrying and maneuvering in the field, physical keypad for entering data without looking up-and-down, and for gloved data entry, size.

What is the price point compared to other comparable products, if there are any – for the upgrade as well as for a completely new one for new customers?

We do not publicly disclose our pricing. People should enquire with us at +1 (435) 753-1881 in North America, or +44 (0) 1527 870773 in EMEA. Or they can contact us via our website at Juniper Systems Rugged Handheld Computers

Why would customers upgrade if they’re currently happy with the rugged handheld they have?

There are many reasons why customers change to a new product. Some of those may include, but are not limited to, a need for longer product lifecycle, end-of-life for their current handheld, a need to migrate to a current operating system (software availability and compatibility may drive some of that), changes to meet new workflows, compatibility with job specific technology, etc.

What were the features that customers most wanted to see in a rugged handheld?

Each customer has a unique set of needed features and they change depending on the industry they work in. The most common we see is a need for a handheld computer that is rugged enough to operate all day in temperature extremes, in wet environments or snow, and in direct sunlight. So the shared features among the many users could be all-day battery life, outdoor viewable display, and that the computer is sealed against water and dust.

Features of the New Allegro 3 and Archer 3 (from company materials):

Allegro 3

The Allegro 3 is the first rugged, mobile handheld computer from Juniper Systems™ to utilize the Android operating system. This third-generation product builds upon the successful formula that Juniper developed and refined in earlier versions of this mobile computer series.

Other features include an ergonomic design that lessens hand and arm fatigue; a high-visibility capacitive display; and a backlit alphanumeric QWERTY keyboard, all carried over from the Allegro 2. The computer supports programs in 5 languages, including English, German, and French.

‘If it’s not broken, don’t fix it. It’s hard to break computers this rugged so we upgraded them instead’, said Juniper Systems’ CEO DeVon Labrum.

Archer 3

The new Archer 3 Rugged Handheld Computer is the most powerful of the best-selling Archer handhelds to date.

Also running on the Android 7 operating system, the Archer 3 is the first in the Archer series to integrate the world’s foremost mobile OS that most people have on their mobile phones.

Juniper Rugged™ and Shared Specifications

The two computers: the Allegro 3 and Archer 3 Rugged Handheld Computers are built Juniper Rugged™, which means they are waterproof, dustproof, shockproof, and meet MIL-STD-810G test procedures. They operate in rain, snow, and extreme temperatures, from -30 degrees C to 70 degrees C without any lapse in functionality.

The Android 7 ‘Nougat’ OS ensures faster data collection, greater speed, and stability on both rugged devices. Programs and files load more quickly and process faster data transfers – all designed for users to expedite work in the field.

An intelligent lithium-ion battery, optimized for cold weather, powers both the Allegro 3 and Archer 3, and provides operating time of 20 hours on a single charge. The battery can easily be swapped out in the field. The 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of flash storage offers ample storage capacity.

Wireless capability on both products includes 4G LTE, extended-range Wi-Fi®, and Smart Ready Bluetooth® with a range of greater than 30 metres (100 feet).

Both the Allegro 3 and Archer 3 rugged handheld computers are now available globally.
