Bentley Year in Infrastructure 2013 kicked off Monday, October 28th in London with a series of keynotes by Bentley executives as well as local luminaries. Antony Oliver, editor of New Civil Engineer in the UK, who is moving into the role of ACE consultant, remarked that “London is the home of infrastructure right now,” and there is a lot going on above and below ground, with Crossrail and Network Rail and other large transportation projects that the UK views as an exemplar of how public transportation will develop in the future. I learned in another conversation that the teams who worked on one were moving over to Crossrail after their stint was finished, bringing their incredible knowledge base with them.

In a conversation with John Fisher, CEO of Canadian-based DMTI Spatial, we discussed that company’s acquisition by mailroom solutions provider, Neopost. According to the press release, Neopost is progressively building a portfolio of new activities to enhance its offering and support its clients’ needs in areas of Customer Communications Management, Data Quality and Shipping Solutions, including logistics and traceability. Neopost has a direct presence in 30 countries, with 6,000 employees and annual sales of €1.1 billion in 2012. Its products and services are sold in more than 90 countries.
Neopost has been growing a software division around data quality for the past several years, and were looking for a company that had deep location expertise to add to the mix. They approached DMTI Spatial and they began working together, and eventually Neopost decided to acquire the location based data quality solutions company.
Living in the American Southwest, where wildfires during the summer months are a constant threat, we are very grateful for the type of research that CoreLogic does with its risk reports. Not only does the company provide data, services and analytics on wildfires, they also provide information on flooding, which is the predictable aftermath of wildfires in the Southwest, as there is nothing left to stop rainwater from roaring down mountainsides and filling arroyos.

Pole Star launched NAO BlueSpot in 2012, the so-called “first” low-cost BLE 4.0 (Bluetooth Low Energy) beacons for the indoor location market. This type of technology has been slower to mature than some others, but the launch paved the way for functions such as proximity detection to identify that someone is inside a structure and send different notifications while entering or exiting the area. NAO Campus, another Pole Star product, provides accurate and metric indoor location for in-store navigation to physical products and advanced analytics to develop new insights around agreeable consumer behavior. This technology is particularly in shopping malls and other large retail venues. To date, more than 2,000 NAO BlueSpots which are compatible with iOS 6 and iOS 7 as well as Android have been deployed in various locations in Europe and the U.S.

With the number of disasters that occur in the world today – both natural and unnatural – children get separated from their families with increasing frequency. Jorge Just, a student in a class called “Design for Unicef,” at New York University’s Tisch School for the Arts, wanted to make a an app for people who were under emotional stress. His idea went beyond the usual app for those with great Wi-Fi connections and cell service available in the inner cities.
Children in third-world countries certainly don’t have these advantages, and what Just found in his five visits to Uganda was that lost children were relegated to old systems where paper-based forms were manually entered into large databases, and the children themselves may not be that distant geographically from their parents.
Paul McRoberts, vice president of Autodesk’s Infrastructure Business, talked this week about the company’s announcement today of Autodesk InfraWorks 360 Pro, that offers the latest 3D modeling, visualization and cloud-based collaboration technologies to address the estimated $30 trillion gap worldwide between desperately needed infrastructure and the funding required to deliver it.
This week The Atlantic and APM’s Marketplace announce a new joint reporting project, “American Futures,” documenting life in small towns and cities across the country, spearheaded by James Fallows, national correspondent for The Atlantic and a pilot, and his wife, the linguist and author Deborah Fallows. The couple has traveled extensively both abroad and in the U.S. with particular interest in small towns and areas that are not necessarily tourist destinations. Fallows spoke about the project at the Esri User Conference 2013 in San Diego in July.
For this project, they will travel from one small-town airport to the next in their propeller-driven Cirrus SR-22 airplane, spending time in towns and cities that are off the beaten path of most people. Kai Ryssdal, host and senior editor of Marketplace, and his team will report from various legs of the trip.
According to a report by ABI Research entitled, “Indoor Location Smartphone Applications,” the ecosystem necessary to drive mass adoption of indoor location applications will be in place by 2016.
As public safety moves closer to a nationwide Next-Generation 9-1-1 system, Geographic Information Systems will play an ever-increasing part.

The use of geographic information systems (GIS) is not new to public safety. It first came on the scene as an important tool with the introduction of wireless 9-1-1 service when location information could not be derived from a fixed service address. In today’s legacy architecture, geocoding or plotting X,Y coordinates is often used in conjunction with mapping applications to help dispatch responders to the correct location, but that has been the extent of its application.
Public safety agencies have been collecting GIS information for decades in order to populate the information found in selective routing database (SRDB), automatic location information (ALI) and master street address guides (MSAG). When an emergency call comes into a legacy GIS-equipped PSAP, associated addresses or X,Y coordinates are delivered as well, though the coordinates are meaningless on their own. In order to be valuable, this data must be plotted on a map in either the call-processing or computer-aided dispatch (CAD) environment. Once plotted, the information can be applied to perform dispatch functions. In this way, GIS is a supplemental tool used to verify location alone.
