Increase in new passenger cars with telematics over next 6 years

According to a prediction issued by ABI Research, the percentage of new passenger cars globally shipping with factory-installed telematics will increase from less than 10% in 2010 to 62% in 2016.

ABI Research practice director Dominique Bonte comments: “Several factors are driving the uptake of OEM telematics, the most important being an automotive industry that is emerging from a painful recession and finding renewed dynamism.

ABI Research report says Wi-Fi location will overshadow all other location technologies

From ABI Research comes the prediction that Wi-Fi location will “outstrip
 all other location technologies including GPS, cellular and MEMs, with shipments reaching more than 1 billion by 2015. ”

Senior analyst Patrick Connolly comments: “Location-based services, revenues and advertising are the hot topics of 2010 as companies grapple to gain control of this market. The key is accurate, ubiquitous location-finding across a variety of portable devices such as mobile phones, tablets and laptops. ABI Research has forecast that with the proliferation of Wi-Fi and increasingly lower cost or free location engines, it will become the most widely available location technology over the next five years.”

Geo-enabled browsers predicted to take world by storm

ABI Research has come out with their “Location-Enabled Services” study that covers geo-enabled browsers, location-based social networking and micro-blogging, messaging and calendar applications, and location-based advertising.

According to their press release, “Location-Enabled Services (LES) such as location-based social networking (Facebook Places), micro-blogging (Twitter), messaging, calendars, advertising, and geo-browsers (Apple Safari, Google Chrome) are set for strong growth driven by standards such as the W3C’s geo-location API. ABI Research forecasts that 1.7 billion geo-enabled browsers will be in use worldwide by 2016.”

“The location industry is entering a new era. Instead of offering separate applications providing specific stand-alone LBS services, location is increasingly positioned as an enabler of existing mobile services.,” Telematics & Navigation practice director Dominique Bonte said. “The transparent use of location results in new business and indirect monetization models, web/widget and open source development environments, changing value and supply chains, the adoption of alternative positioning technologies, new content sourcing paradigms, and innovative interfaces (Augmented Reality).”
Privacy is a big issue for the LES space, according to ABI. Vendors are concerned about how location data will be used – even if users can delete their location history, companies that mine data may be able to still store, analyze and use this location data for advertising purposes. There is also the concern that it could get into the hands of those with unauthorized access, in much the same way spammers gain access to email addresses and other personal information.

Navigation device shipments expected to almost triple in next five years

According to a report issued by ABI Research, The number of navigation shipments – encompassing all current form factors including in-dash, portable, and mobile navigation devices — is expected to grow from more than 100 million in 2010 to 283 million in 2015.

ABI Research practice director Dominique Bonte comments: “The launches of free turn-by-turn off-board navigation by Google on Android handsets in the United States in 2009 and in some European countries in 2010, and on-board navigation globally by Nokia in January 2010, are driving the popularity of handset-based navigation and putting additional pressure on the price of on-board and off-board navigation solutions offered by other vendors.”

Worldwide mobile subscriptions forecast at over 5 billion by ABI Research

In the Analyst Insider from ABI Research the company forecasts over five billion mobile subscriptions by the end of 2010 worldwide, predicting approximately 4.8 billion connections having been reached by the end of the year’s first quarter. According to the report, much of this growth will be registered in developing markets in Africa and the Asia-Pacific region. Africa remains the fastest growing mobile market with a YoY growth of over 22%. Mobile penetration in Asia-Pacific will rise significantly to 65% by the end of 2010.

Mobile cloud services forecasted

According to ABI Research, “the number of people using mobile cloud services will rapidly grow over the next five years, reaching 998 million in 2014. Last year, these kind of services were used by 42.8 million subscribers, which is approximately 1.1% of all mobile users. In comparison, the number of people that are expected to use mobile cloud in 2014 will represent nearly 19% of all mobile phone users.” – Dusan Belic, ABI Research, Sept. 9, 2009
