Intergraph Mobile MapWorks launches

Monday, September 23rd, 2013

Recalling Intergraph’s long history in hardware, servers and desktop software solutions, this iOS and Android based app may seem like a departure for the company, although it is very much a sign of the times. Intergraph has launched Intergraph Mobile MapWorks, an iOS and Android tablet-based app for viewing, editing and updating field asset information in real-time.  It can be downloaded from Apple’s iTunes and the Google Play app stores. Field asset information can be accessed easily through mobile apps like this one, with very intuitive interfaces. Local government professionals use tablets as a matter of course in their field work, and find this type of application to be a perfect fit.

Can Your Phone Find Your Car?

This review in this morning’s New York Times caught my eye – how many times have I wished for some sort of gadget to find my car in a parking lot? I have tied a hiking stick to the roof of my car to make it more noticeable in busy parking lots. But that’s not always so easy. Cars are all created in about three to four colors unless you customize yours with psychedelic magic bus colors or something.

This article cites several new apps for free or at minimal cost that will find your car for you, using your phone’s GPS and some will even work from photos!

Google shares outrank Microsoft’s

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

As the markets closed this Monday, Google (GOOG) shares are at $249.1 billion, much higher than Microsoft’s ($247.2 billion). Despite Microsoft’s healthy performance over the past year, in which shares are up nearly 20 percent, it is reporting it’s first ever quarterly loss since going public.

Industry experts say that although Windows 8 is debuting this month, the Windows platform is waning in popularity. Microsoft has been slow to pick up mobile, and now has come forth claiming that the new oeprating system will translate well from PCs to mobile devices.

shopkick expands to Android just in time for the holiday season

Friday, November 19th, 2010

shopkick is expanding to the Android platform, effective immediately.

shopkick is a free (and only) app in the Android Market that rewards shoppers for walking into participating retailers, including Best Buy, Macy’s, Inc., Target Corporation, American Eagle Outfitters, Inc., Simon Property Group, Inc. malls, Sports Authority and Wet Seal, Inc., and for interacting with partner brand products HP, Procter & Gamble and Kraft Foods.

The shopkick app verifies the actual presence of a shopper by detecting a “shopkick Signal” coming from the shopkick transmitter located in each participating store. The user can control privacy because the detection happens on the mobile phone.  Once a shopkick Signal is detected, the app delivers reward points called “kickbucks” to the user — just for walking through the door.

Users can then redeem kickbucks at all partner stores for instant gift card rewards or for Facebook Credits to play games online, song downloads, hotel vouchers, specific products, and can even donate to their favorite charity.

Press materials say that by Black Friday, more than 1,000 individual stores and over 100 of the country’s largest malls will have fully deployed shopkick’s technology.
