In an interview with vice president of Public Safety Products, Intergraph SG&I Kalyn Sims, and Russ Johnson, director of Public Safety for Esri, discussed the latest collaboration between the two companies, to enhance geospatial capabilities for public safety and security agencies. Through the collaboration, the companies will work to more tightly align Intergraph’s Computer-Aided Dispatch system, I/CAD, and Esri’s ArcGIS Platform.

Michel Gilles, vice president for Utilities and Communications for Intergraph, talked with GISCafe Voice this week about the recent strategic alliance between Intergraph and ETAP, to collaborate on their products’ integration and address the market for utilities and telecommunications. This fast-growing market is now beginning to support new sources of generation and production of energy. The announcement was made at DistribuTECH.
In the “Utilities and Government” breakout session on Media Day at the Bentley “Year in Infrastructure 2014” event held in London last week, a number of Bentley executives spoke on various aspects of utilities and government, with new developments for 3D cities.
The event showcases work being done with Bentley Systems’ software, with presentations by all the Be Inspired Award finalists for the year, topped off by a gala Awards ceremony on Wednesday evening.
Cyndi Smith, senior director of Application Advantage at Bentley, introduced speakers. Aidan Mercer, senior industry marketing manager for Government spoke on “Advancements in Government and Life cycle Management of Infrastructure.” He also spoke about “Advanced BIM for cities,” which includes the various BIM levels used in 3D cities: Level 1: 3D visualization and design; Level 2: performance improvements; Level 3: extending into the operations at the complete asset level and this contributes to a smarter city. He mentioned a really excited finalist in the BE Awards this year, the City of Eindhoven, a city that uses MicroStation, Descartes, ProjectWise, and Navigator in its development of new city infrastructure.

Rachel Rogers, Applications Advantage for Civil, Geospatial, Hydraulics and Hydrology, announced Bentley Subsurface Utility Design and Analysis in OpenRoads will be available in early 2015, and will be a game changer in terms of knowing what’s underground.
The product automatically creates a 3D model and brings together the information needed, provides 3D modeling of all underground utilities, that you can readily update into your GIS database. This gives you a true picture of what’s underground.
One of the highlights is that you have visualization clash detection which can drive construction costs down.

An industry trend seen recently: convergence. “With the convergence of information technology and operations technology, some projects I’m seeing are bringing in engineering technology,” said Smith.

Recalling Intergraph’s long history in hardware, servers and desktop software solutions, this iOS and Android based app may seem like a departure for the company, although it is very much a sign of the times. Intergraph has launched Intergraph Mobile MapWorks, an iOS and Android tablet-based app for viewing, editing and updating field asset information in real-time. It can be downloaded from Apple’s iTunes and the Google Play app stores. Field asset information can be accessed easily through mobile apps like this one, with very intuitive interfaces. Local government professionals use tablets as a matter of course in their field work, and find this type of application to be a perfect fit.
Mladen Stojic, vice president of Geospatial at Intergraph, presented at a virtual press event this week to announce the Intergraph 2013 Geospatial Portfolio.
At Hexagon 2012 held in Las Vegas this past week, the opening of the Hexagon Online Marketplace, Hexagon’s Internet-based store, was announced. To many industry watchers, this is unprecedented. According to the press release, “the Hexagon Online Marketplace signifies the first ever Hexagon-level, direct-to-customer venture, and provides customers with a simplified method of purchasing select Hexagon products and services.” Those of us who have watched Intergraph, recently acquired by Hexagon, for many years, would not have thought this type of direct-to-customer marketing venture possible.
It is a sign of the times, however, where an online store allows customers of various professional backgrounds to explore high end offerings that have traditionally been the province of government and big commercial contracts.
