I don’t understand your GIS web site, and product offering!

Don’t you hate that. Thinking: I don’t understand your GIS web site, and product offering!

It might look nice, be very professional. But leaves you no wiser as to the product or services offered than before you started browsing. What a waste. Maybe the product is as empty as the Web site. But maybe not. If the latter, you are blowing it royally.

I came across a great example the other day. I know the company well. Know their staff, and the great work they do. They have just launched a new GIS mobile solution suite. A tonne of work has gone into this, their first true products. But visit the Web site and …. you’ll see polish and professionalism, some high level descriptions, mostly marketing messages, but are left with little else. Just ‘Contact us for more Info’.

Most of us are busy. Catch our attention quickly. Point us in the right direction if we want to dig deeper. Keep it simple, and clear. But leave us with understanding and interest. Give us nebulous marketing messages, and we quickly move on.

I found a couple of examples of sites I think do a great job with attention grabbing, understanding and information sharing. The first is MapBox map services “Design beautiful maps, build apps”. Their site is clear and concise. Want to dig deeper; obvious links point you in the right direction.

Another site worth mention is Control4. These guys offer home automation systems. Sounds cool, but what is a ‘home automation system’? Front and centre on their Web site is a video which provides a nice overview of their solutions.

I personally love videos. Its why we produce so many on mobile GIS. Videos provide a quick and easy way to grab interest, share information and improve understanding. Another good approach is to share ebooks and client implementations. HubSpot are a standout example here.

I want to understand your GIS web site. If you have a great GIS product, grab my interest and help me understand how this might help our clients.
