Leica Geosystems is excited to announce three new educational movies about laser scanning. The movies provide an easy-to-understand introduction to 3D laser scanning (also known as High-Definition Surveying™ or HDS™) for the rapidly growing number of people researching it for the first time.
Chapter 1 – “The Basics” is an overview with film footage of scanning in the field and processing “point clouds” in the office into drawings, models, etc. It also describes common mapping and as-built survey applications, benefits, types of deliverables, and options that users have for taking advantage of the technology.

Esri Maps for Office is a new product that allows you to quickly create dynamic, interactive maps of your Excel data and start exploring it in a whole new way. Esri Maps for Office enables you to uncover patterns and trends not evident in tabular data and charts. The process of creating a map in Excel is painless, and is much the same as creating a graph or chart of your data. Maps can be shared immediately through PowerPoint presentations or by one-click publishing to Esri’s mapping cloud, ArcGIS Online. This workshop will demonstrate the value of the product using a number of use case scenarios.

In this talk (which was recorded as a dry run for a seminar) Rich presents a very brief introduction to the Python programming language from the point of view of someone wanting to perform data manipulation on geographic data. He outlines what a GIS is (essentially the meeting point between computers and map-making) and cover some issues to do with raster data on the Earth’s surface.
He covers the importance of choosing your sampling wisely, how to generate contoured heigh plots, faux 3d-shared relief maps, slope and aspect plots. Then there is a discussion about some simple de-noising strategies for freely accessible data and investigate a strange phenomenon in Oxfordshire.
