Dealing with map projections, coordinate systems and datums can be very
frustrating, when trying to integrate data into a GIS. ESRI has a great utility, the
Projection Utility that can be run from within ArcView 3.2 or as a stand-alone
application. Hopefully, the following scraps of information from the book,
‘Understanding Map Projections’ by ESRI, will help to ease your troubled mind.
First, to understand the problem, we need to understand map projections. Don’t
put the newsletter down, just yet. I promise to make this as quick and painless as
possible. There are two kinds of coordinate systems: Geographic and Projected.
