Public works and geographic information system (GIS) technology have a
long and successful history together. GIS has provided public works
departments with the data management and visualization tools necessary
to support daily operations from mapping to data collection to analysis
helping plan, implement, and maintain the critical infrastructure of the
community. However, in recent years, information management has
become an equally crucial function of local government, requiring a
parallel infrastructure of computerized systems to help meet demand, track
progress, and plan for the future.
