MotionBased Technologies was founded on the premise that technology can help performance
athletes get more out of their workouts. MotionBased had an idea to use a PC-enabled global
positioning system (GPS) device to track training data. The company envisioned users turning on
their lightweight GPS, going for a run, then logging on to MotionBased’s Web site to upload data
from the GPS unit for viewing. Once uploaded, their training statistics could be viewed not only
by traditional means, including charts and graphs, but also on a map. MotionBased needed a
cost-effective way to incorporate maps and data into its innovative Internet application.
