The mission of NGS is to increase and diffuse geographic knowledge. One consistent tool in this endeavor has been maps and, increasingly, mapping technology. When the staff of the National Geographic Museum created the exhibit Mapping with Paper and Pixel for the gallery at its headquarters in Washington, D.C., it needed an intuitive way to present various types of geographic data to people who are unfamiliar with computer mapping and geographic information system (GIS) technology.
