The mission of NGS is to increase and diffuse
geographic knowledge. One consistent tool in
this endeavor has been maps and, increasingly,
mapping technology. When the staff of the
National Geographic Museum created the
exhibit Mapping with Paper and Pixel for the
gallery at its headquarters in Washington, D.C.,
it needed an intuitive way to present various
types of geographic data to people who are
unfamiliar with computer mapping and geographic
information system (GIS) technology.
