The Utah State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) maintains a GIS of archaeological sites and investigations throughout Utah. Permitted archaeologists use this data for researching future projects. SHPO uses this data to advise other agencies in their compliance responsibilities. Keeping this data current, however, has long been a challenge. Distributed data entry applications were explored and rejected for complexity and maintenance problems. The nature of the data makes it impractical for users to submit GIS files for individual projects. An ArcGIS Server application was developed to provide for remote data entry, query of extant data, and business process management. The need for this tool has been brewing for many decades. At last, Utah’s archaeological community can begin using this data for the public good--for the research and protection of our shared cultural resources.
