The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) is the component of the National Institutes of Health responsible for understanding human health consequences associated with exposure to environmental contaminants. This focus on environmental hazards made NIEHS uniquely positioned to provide information on potential sources of environmental contaminants and possible exposure impacts on responders and victims during Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
