The Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) contributes greatly to Illinois’ economic,
social, and environmental vitality by providing an integrated network of transportation facilities
across the state. While the core mission of the Illinois DOT is to provide a safe transportation
system that ensures the mobility of people and goods, enhances economic prosperity, and
preserves the quality of our environment and communities, technologies such as Geographic
Information Systems (GIS) constitute a key element in helping IDOT monitor the transportation
system and work more efficiently and effectively as an organization.
