As is the case with most energy companies today, FirstEnergy Corp of Akron, Ohio, looks at operational efficiency as the key to financial performance improvements and shareholder profit. After a series of mergers, FirstEnergy had grown to become the fifth largest electric system in the U.S., with 4.5 million customers and a service territory extending through Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
