Multibeam sonars have been around now for some 40 years and their use in shallow waters for the last 14 years. Hardware and software have managed to leap frog each other for most of that time but in recent years the volume of data gathered by shallow water multibeam systems operating at up to 40 pings per second has threatened to overwhelm the software and hence the data processor
