www.mapwares.com -- LayerTool for ArcMap allows you to create layer files and save them into groups, allowing everyone in your organization a simple way to add data with proper symbology.
Why use the LayerTool? LayerTool allows you to create layer files (.lyr) and save them into groups. Layer files are pointers to your actual data (shapefile, coverage, geodatabase, etc.) and allow you to store symbology. LayerTool is useful, for example, to a GIS coordinator for a town who wants to provide other departments with an easy way to add data to their ArcMap projects. Layers can be organized into groups like Streets, Water, Utilities, Structures, etc. The “Configure” button gives you access to tools to create and manage the layer files. These tools are hidden for the average user who only needs to browse through the groups to find layers to add to a project. Once groups and layer files have been set up, the tool can be set up on computers throughout your network simply by clicking “Change Directory” and navigating to the directory where the layer files were created.
