The rich and textured international diversity of the United States can be seen in the charts in this brief handout. The top 20 immigrant-sending countries, by decade, are presented along with the total number of immigrants for the same time periods. A unique chart also compares the number of immigrants to the number of births (to natives and immigrants combined) in the US for the 20th Century and beyond, illustrating the impact of combined native and immigrant fertility on US population growth relative to the effect of immigrant arrivals alone on US population growth. The immigrant data used in this report are from the Department of Homeland Security, Office of Immigration Statistics, and include documented immigrants only. Birth data are from the National Center for Health Statistics.
