As details became available about the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, a call for help came from the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (URISA) volunteer organization, GISCorps. URISA is made up of geographic information system (GIS) professionals who work in many communities across the country, and GISCorps was established in 2002 to coordinate short-term GIS services to communities in need.
