November 01, 2011 -- GeoPlace has been announced as a winner in a European wide programme by EUROGI - the European Umbrella Organisation for Geographic Information. GeoPlace is a public sector limited liability partnership between the UK’s Local Government Association and Ordnance Survey.
From nearly 50 entries across Europe, and the only UK Award winner, GeoPlace was awarded the winner in the "Quantity and Quality" category for the creation of the National Address Gazetteer Database. The awarding process was based on the SDI self-assessment framework. The Awards Jury then assigned grades to various indicators and ranked the entries with reference to six criteria.
The GeoPlace entry focussed on the establishment of the National Address Gazetteer Database. It described how the National Address Gazetteer Database was created and how it is being maintained as an intelligent, comprehensive, current address and street database. The entry also looked at how it is being shared amongst the whole of the public sector under the terms of the Public Sector Mapping Agreement (PSMA) as well as the wider commercial markets.
Franco Vico, one of the EUROGI judges commented on why GeoPlace won the ‘Quantity and Quality’ category; “It is all about data, it is all about bottom up data flow, it is all about data integration. The GeoPlace entry demonstrated an excellent good practice model.”
In collecting the Award at the EUROGI Awards Conference on 12th October in Brussels, Steve Brandwood, Head of Services and Engagement at GeoPlace said; ‘It’s extremely gratifying to receive European recognition of the importance of address and street data as an SDI and receive recognition for the sheer scale of what has been achieved in the UK.’
