  • January 18, 2012 -- Production of georeferenced digital 3D landmarks from terrestrial photography using the software suite tridicon® 3D LANDMARK

Digital 3D city models become very popular. Internet maps and car navigation are much more user-friendly when using 3D visualisation. Many municipalities use 3D city models for applications in town and environmental planning, for noise control management, for solar panel assessments or for marketing purposes. New technologies like 3D printing allow the fast and cost-efficient production of physical models.

For reasons of budget restrictions, the digital city models often are generated without any textures. However, the integration of sights like churches, museums, town halls and other important buildings as photorealistic 3D landmarks enhances a city model considerably and improves personal orientation as well as recognition value.

The software suite tridicon® 3D LANDMARK provides the necessary tools for modelling buildings from digital photography. One component of the package is a calibrated camera with geotagger for taking high-resolution close-range photographs of the buildings. With tridicon® software you can very precisely measure and model the buildings from the photographs. In a further step the facades receive photorealistic textures. The automatic georeferencing of the 3D models as well as export options into all common data formats make sure that the landmarks can be integrated into any existing 3D city model without problems.

A two-day training course which is also part of the software package conveys the necessary know-how for taking the photos, 3D modelling, texturing the models as well as the integration of the produced landmarks into an existing 3D city model or earth browsers like Google Earth.

About  GTA Geoinformatik GmbH GTA, founded in 1991 as geoinformatics company with its main office in Neubrandenburg, Germany, is one of the leading developers and producers in the 3D geodata sector. The  tridicon® software solution offers modules for the automatic generation and texturing of 3D city models and different solutions for the generation of almost any level of detail of a 3D city model. GTA also licenses more than 220 digital 3D city models of European and North American major cities and capitals as well as 5.000 digital 3D landmarks under favourable conditions.
