Lancaster, Pennsylvania (March 1, 2012) – geographIT presented two mobile GIS seminars for Michigan’s Access to Geographic Information Networks ( IMAGIN) Geospatial Education Workshop series. The seminars were held February 10, 2012 at the University of Michigan’s North Campus in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Mr. Rob Fisher from geographIT was the instructor for both seminars.
A two hour morning seminar titled “Introduction to Mobile GIS” provided an overview of mobile GIS technologies and computing platforms for implementing mobile GIS solutions. Three use cases illustrated a variety of mobile technology architecture options to accommodate differing levels of functionality and available budgets.
A two hour afternoon seminar titled “A Case Study of Mobile GIS via SWEEP” focused on the design, architecture, implementation, and success of a mobile electronic ticketing system developed for the City of Philadelphia’s Streets & Walkways Education and Enforcement Program (SWEEP). It included a review of the criteria used for selecting ruggedized mobile wireless devices, software technology components, custom software features designed to enhance ease of use and increased accuracy for ticketing, wireless printing and RFID reading technologies, data synchronization, and back office procedures for preparing and backing up critical data. The increase in tickets issued and revenues collected after the system was placed into production highlighted the return on investment that can be achieved by implementing mobile ticketing solutions to replace paper based methods.
