CubeWerx Announces WMS Extensions for ArcGIS? 8 and MapInfo Professional? 7.0

ArcGIS® 8 and MapInfo Professional® 7.0 GIS desktop users can now browse through terabytes of geospatial data being made available by OGC-compliant Web Map Servers

Gatineau, January 22, 2004 – CubeWerx, the leader in the development and commercialisation of interoperable technologies for the storage, management and distribution of geospatial data on the Internet, announced today that it will soon release software extensions that allow ESRI® ArcGIS® 8 and MapInfo Professional® 7 GIS desktop users to fully leverage all the capabilities of OGC-compliant Web Map Servers.

The CubeWerx software extensions provide the functionality required for:

-Requesting and displaying capabilities of OGC-compliant Web Map Servers, giving an immediate and comprehensive overview of available layers, support for projections and image formats, etc.
Caching and refreshing capabilities of OGC-compliant Web Map Servers, to speed up launch of map request.
-WMS Server Capabilities Display – Control window allows GIS desktop users to gain an immediate overview of all metadata characterizing the Web Map Server (available layers, supported projections, available image formats, etc.)
-Intuitive drag and drop composition of maps - A hierarchical representation of available data stores, themes, layers and styles, facilitates the creation of maps.
-Automatic Map Refresh - Panning and zooming in GIS desktop application window automatically triggers a new map request to refresh all map layers displayed in the Area of Interest (AOI).
-Users can request and view attributive data for a particular feature by simply clicking on it.
-Secure Environment – CubeWerx WMS extensions support SSL (https) as well as X.509 certificate management.
-Optional Extraction Capability - Allows users to download data from CubeSERV® Download Server in native formats.

The release of the WMS Extensions is planned for mid-February 2004. A demo version will be made available from the CubeWerx's Web site.

"The WMS Extensions for ESRI® and MapInfo® GIS Toolkits provide a critical link between well established communities of practice and newer, interoperable Web Services." said Edric Keighan, CEO of CubeWerx. "In essence, there is no longer the need to learn new Web-based client applications for these users, when they can now simply browse GeoData transparently and seamlessly from their desktop GIS applications."

"CubeWerx WMS Extensions for ESRI® ArcGIS® 8 and MapInfo Professional® 7 allow our communities of users to discover and access the geospatial data that is maintained in our spatial data warehouse" said James Moore, Senior Informatics Advisor at Health Canada. "These WMS extensions allow us to deliver the contents of our Spatial Data Warehouse to existing clients in an interoperable, non-proprietary fashion; this allows our clients, already familiar with these tools, to focus on the subject matter of their particular analysis and not the tools."

The development of the WMS extensions was carried out under the GeoConnections Secretariat and within the GeoInnovations program. More information on GeoConnections is available on the Internet at
