SPOT 6 Completes Technical Commissioning
SPOT6 SPOT 6 was officially declared "good to go" after the recent completion of technical commissioning. All satellite functions and performance are nominal, in some cases even exceeding specifications.

The sensor's agility has been thoroughly tested; with scenarios including imaging large areas in a single pass (e.g. 500km x 150km), consecutive long strip acquisitions (e.g. 1500km in 3 North-South segments) and target acquisitions (e.g. more than 15 scenes - 60km x 60km - over the same point in one pass).

Open Ocean Surveillance Considering that more than 90 percent of the world's trade goods
and more than 70 percent of global crude oil today are transported
by seaborne traffic, maritime security is of utmost importance. From
about 800 million tons of loaded cargo transported on the oceans
in 1955, maritime traffic has increased to 8 billion tons in 2007.
Maritime transportation today is one of the most globalized industries in terms of operation and ownership.

Turkey Steps up Collaboration with Astrium Services
Spot 6 and 7 Astrium Services and the Istanbul Technical University (ITU) signed two agreements in Istanbul on October 19, 2012 to develop high-resolution and large-area coverage services in Turkey, notably for agriculture. The agreements cover a SPOT New Generation receiving station and reception of data from SPOT 6 and SPOT 7, as well as an extension for SPOT 5 data.

With more than 50 direct receiving stations operating on all five continents, Astrium has the most extensive station network in the world today.

Get the Benefits of JPEG 2000
astrium logo JPEG 2000 is an ISO standard (ISO/CEI 154441) created by the Joint Photographic Experts Group for image compression. It provides both lossless and lossy compression, which enables scalability in resolution, quality and easier data handling (download, upload, sharing, streaming and processing).

JPEG 2000 is now an open standard solution to compress very large, multiple-band, and greater bit-depth images. Its popularity is growing in the remote sensing community due to its capabilities.

Pléiades 1B Satellite Successfully Launched

On December 2, 2012, Soyuz flight VS04 launched the Pléiades 1B very high-resolution optical satellite from the Guiana Space Centre. The launch marks a new success for ESA, CNES and Arianespace, who jointly operate the launch base, less than a year after orbiting Pléiades 1A. Astrium Services will be the exclusive distributor of imagery from Pléiades 1A and 1B.

Pléiades 1B was released from the launch vehicle at 03h57 near its final 694-km orbit, which it will reach within the next few days. The satellite will be phased 180° with Pléiades 1A on the same orbit to form a true constellation offering daily revisits to any point on the globe.
