- Revolutionary changes to Optech Lynx Mobile Mapper™
The release of Optech LMS 2.4 this April triggered an explosion in productivity for Lynx Mobile Mapper™ users, as its automated boresighting and pre-processing abilities maximized data accuracy while minimizing the user input required. Following up on this advance, Optech made further revolutionary changes in June by splitting the Lynx product into two models. The new survey-grade Lynx SG1 has a 600-kHz dual-sensor system for a total of 1.2 million data points collected per second, while the mapping-grade Lynx MG1 provides an option for the low-budget operator who still needs Optech’s famous lidar technology. Optech also added another camera option for the Lynx, the Ladybug® spherical imaging camera from Point Grey Research Inc.
- Optech wraps up third Imaging and Lidar Solutions Conference
Optech wrapped up its third Imaging and Lidar Solutions Conference (ILSC) on June 27th in Toronto, Canada. Participants from across the globe came together to discuss new applications for lidar, camera and multispectral sensors, learn the latest developments in the remote sensing industry, and network with other professionals. Optech founder Allan Carswell gave a retrospective on his work in the field of lidar, and Teledyne DALSA CEO Brian Doody discussed how Optech’s acquisition would benefit users. Attendees also updated their skills at the pre-conference workshops, including a special workshop on managing, producing and sharing lidar data and 3D information with Esri, Optech’s new business partner.
- NASA predicts snowmelt with Optech ALTMs
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory has pioneered a new application for Optech lidar systems by using them to predict snowmelt. In conjunction with the California Department of Water Resources, JPL used successive surveys with Optech Gemini and Orion ALTMs to measure the snow depth in the Tuolumne and Uncompahgre River Basins, which enables them to calculate the volume of the snow and its water equivalent to within 5% in only 24 hours. Knowing exactly how much snowmelt will enter the watershed helps local water managers control floods, plan hydroelectric power generation, and manage their water supply more effectively. - Optech completes new hangar and training facility
Optech is pleased to unveil its newly completed private aircraft hangar and training facility in Oshawa, Canada, replacing the shared space Optech previously used. The 8,000-sq. ft. structure is custom-built to fit Optech’s unique requirements, with enough heated hangar space for all of Optech’s aircraft, plus dedicated maintenance equipment so that aircraft can be repaired and modified on-site. It also features comfortable classroom space for up to 12 people at a time so that trainees can learn how to use their ALTM system and immediately put their new skills into practice.
