Germany's per-capita purchasing power to increase by €586 in 2014

GfK Purchasing Power Germany 2014

Bruchsal, December 4, 2013 – The study "GfK Purchasing Power Germany 2014" shows that Germans nominally have around €586 more per-capita purchasing power at their disposal for expenditures in 2014 than in 2013. The results of the 2011 census were taken into account for the first time in this year’s calculation.

GfK forecasts a total purchasing power of €1,705.4 bil. for all of Germany in 2014. Based on the current population of 80,523,746 (as of 01.01.2013), this equates to €21,179 per person. This means that Germans will nominally have an average of €586 or 2.85 percent more per person at their disposal in 2014 for consumption, rent and other living costs compared to the previous year. Purchasing power corresponds to the population's disposable net income, including government subsidies such as pension payments, unemployment assistance and child benefit.

Given Eurostat's predicted inflation rate of 1.7 percent and the stabile income growth, Germans as a whole can look forward to both a nominal and a slight real-value increase of around 1.1 percent in per-capita purchasing power," says GfK market data expert Simone Baecker-Neuchl. "But not all segments of the population can expect this increase in purchasing power. For example, the regional distribution of purchasing power shows that there is still a prosperity gap between western and eastern Germany.

For 2014, the population data used for the per-capita average values is based on the new data from the 2011 census; this results in an even more precise indication of the regional consumption potential of the population, as measured at the place of residence.

Germany's federal states

With regard to Germany's federal states, Hamburg's index rating of 110.8 increases its lead over Bavaria (index: 109.4). Baden-Württemburg lands at third place (index: 107.5) in front of Hesse (index: 106.8). Six of Germany's 16 federal states have above-average per-capita purchasing power. North Rhine-Westphalia falls at around the national average. The eastern German federal states continue to have below-average per-capita purchasing power. Last place is occupied by Saxony-Anhalt with €17,336 per person.

District ranking: Erlangen and Miesbach move into top ten

A geographic analysis of the census results in June 2013 by GfK geomarketing experts reveals that the downward adjustment of the population by 1.5 million has not impacted all regions equally. Many metropolitan inner city areas have lost more inhabitants through this adjustment than the surrounding areas. But because the population figures have gone down as a whole, the overall picture with respect to Germany's population remains similar.

The top-ten urban and rural districts remain the same apart from two changes in the bottom third of the rankings. With an index value of 121.9, the rural district of Miesbach pushes the rural district of Stormarn (index: 121.3) out of the top ten. The rural district of Dachau (index: 125.1) overtakes the urban district of Erlangen (index: 124.9).
