Mobile app for utilities connects with Esri’s geographic information system, enabling real-time communication for increased worker productivity and safety
PALM SPRINGS, Calif. – March 11, 2014 – Esri Canada congratulates Clevest for receiving the 2014 Esri Partner Award for the Best Mobile App. The company was recognized for its WorkBook app, which enables real-time communication between a utility’s office supervisors and field technicians by integrating Esri’s geographic information system (GIS) technology. The app increases workers’ productivity and safety by allowing them to access maps, routes and workflows on mobile devices, even without wireless connectivity. The award was presented on Saturday, March 8, at the Esri Partner Conference in California.
“We’re extremely proud to have been recognized by the industry leader in GIS for our new mobile app,” said Peter Millar, vice president, product marketing, Clevest. “WorkBook is a testament not only to our expertise in the utility industry, but also to our commitment to collaborate with industry leaders like Esri. Clevest has received excellent support from Esri. The company’s technical experts in both California and at Esri Canada worked closely with our engineering team to advance the development of WorkBook with new ArcGIS technology. Esri also provided tremendous support through joint customer education and marketing efforts which allowed us to get a product in the field that addresses customers’ needs.”
“Field technicians need to ensure that they’re servicing the right asset at the right location to avoid costly mistakes and safety incidents,” noted Alex Miller, president, Esri Canada. “Through Clevest’s WorkBook app, utility workers can quickly locate assets on a map as well as access forms to guide them through complex inspection and maintenance workflows. This helps them to complete a job quickly, correctly and safely. We applaud Clevest’s efforts to develop an outstanding app that combines the best in mobile workforce management and GIS technologies.”
WorkBook is an integral component of the Clevest Mobile Workforce Management (MWFM) solution, which unifies the field and office on a single mobile platform to wirelessly manage a utility’s mobile workers and any type of work they perform. The app can be deployed on laptops, tablets and smartphones. It tightly integrates with online basemaps in Esri’s ArcGIS Online solution and GIS data layers hosted by a utility’s ArcGIS for Server platform. WorkBook allows field personnel to visualize where they are in relation to their work orders, create orders from GIS assets, search and filter GIS assets to view relevant information, and get optimized routes to minimize driving time between locations.
The app provides workers with immediate access to their assigned work, including notification of new work orders assigned throughout the day. As work gets completed, updates are automatically sent back to the office. WorkBook also supports workers’ ability to perform duties even when they are in areas with no wireless coverage by allowing them to view maps and routes offline; synchronization happens automatically once they are back in cellular range. Mobile and lone workers benefit from enhanced safety features such as a safety timer, man-down pendant and emergency button. Since it’s turned on prior to engaging in a potentially dangerous activity or working in hazardous environments, the office is alerted if an emergency occurs. Should an unforeseen situation arise, rescue operations are greatly enhanced by allowing the dispatcher to monitor and pinpoint the worker’s location on the map.
