Register for the OGC Testbed 10 Webinars!

5 May 2014 – T he Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) invites software developers, location service providers, spatial analytics experts, system architects and information system managers to attend two free webinars to learn about the results of the recent OGC Testbed 10.  See registration details below.
  • Work done in the OGC Testbed 10 Aviation Thread will be presented in an OGC webinar on 27 May 2014, from 1000 to 1130 EDT. One example of how OGC standards now enable new capabilities in Aviation: In addition to aeronautical and weather data, flight data can now be integrated in an ad hoc fashion into Aviation workflows, using an interoperable system based on open standards.

  • Work done in the OGC Testbed 10 Cross-Community Interoperability (CCI) and Open Mobility Threads will be presented in an OGC webinar on 28 May 2014, from 1000 to 1130 EDT.

    • Examples of how OGC standards now enable new capabilities in CCI: The US and Canada can now map hydrologic features to an international standard for such data and more easily crosswalk their data to and from the two country's formats. Also, location data from a region can be collected via OGC Web Services, linked data methods and crowdsourced contributions from mobile devices. The data can be conflated, linked and updated while keeping track of the changes using standard provenance models.

    • Examples of how OGC standards now enable new capabilities in Open Mobility: The OGC GeoPackage Encoding Standard, an SQLite-based mobile-friendly file format, now has a Web Processing Service API to automate the process of creating GeoPackages that get their data from other OGC services like OGC Web Feature Service (WFS) and Web Map Tile Service (WMTS). Keeping GeoPackages in sync with their “parent” data sets was also addressed. And the new encoding format to communicate shared situational awareness, OWS Context, was excercised to create map annotations, integrate with NIEM (US National Information Exchange Model), and describe the contents of GeoPackages.
OGC Testbed 10 participants included twenty-nine organizations from US, Canada, Europe, Australia and Taiwan. They integrated 40 different software components, many of them developed for the testbed, to advance new standards in the OGC and to demonstrate best practices for using proposed and adopted OGC standards and open specifications from other organizations.

The OGC Testbed 10 yielded 19 total Engineering Reports (ERs) across the 3 main activity threads: Aviation (6), Cross-Community Interoperability (7), and Open Mobility (6). The ERs are being reviewed for final publication in the weeks ahead. As these ERs are approved for release, links to them will be provided on the OGC Testbed 10 website. Findings from Testbed 10 will be reviewed in the OGC's Standards Working Groups, leading to additions and improvements to various OGC documents.

The OGC Testbed 10 sponsors who contributed requirements, devised scenarios and shared the costs of development were:
  • AGC (Army Geospatial Center, US Army Corps of Engineers)
  • ESA (European Space Agency)
  • EUROCONTROL
  • FAA (US Federal Aviation Administration)
  • GeoConnections - Natural Resources Canada
  • Harris Corporation
  • Lockheed Martin Corporation
  • NGA (US National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency)
  • NOAA National Weather Service
  • USGS (US Geological Survey)
  • UK DSTL (UK Defence Science and Technology Lab)

IMPORTANT: Organizations interested in sponsoring the next OGC Testbed have begun discussing technology threads, use cases, and scenarios for the OGC Testbed 11. It's not too late to bring your organization's interoperability issues into these discussions! The Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) is an international consortium of more than 475 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available geospatial standards. OGC standards support interoperable solutions that "geo-enable" the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT. OGC standards empower technology developers to make geospatial information and services accessible and useful with any application that needs to be geospatially enabled.
