OGC(R) Requests Quotations for CGDI Interoperability Pilot

April 18, 2007, Wayland, MA -- The Open Geospatial Consortium, Inc. (OGC) has issued a Request For Quotations and Call for Participation (RFQ/CFP) to solicit proposals in response to requirements for the Canadian Geospatial Data Infrastructure (CGDI) Interoperability Pilot.

The CGDI Interoperability Pilot is sponsored by GeoConnections, a Canadian partnership program whose primary objective is to evolve and expand the CGDI. GeoConnections is providing cost-sharing funds to offset expenses associated with the initiative. GeoConnections and the OGC intend to involve as many participants in the initiative as possible and thus are soliciting proposals that will enhance and/or make use of the initiative outcomes. Responses are due by 2 May 2007and the Pilot Kickoff Meeting will be held the week of 25 June 2007. Technology deployments will be complete by October 2007, followed by a 6 month pre-operational phase.

In the pilot, GeoConnections and provincial partners will test improved mechanisms for the distribution and update of framework data (geographic names, national road network, administrative boundaries, etc.), providing users with access to the most current and authoritative data, avoiding version disparities, and minimizing duplication. Provincial stakeholders will receive business consulting and technical assistance with the implementation of onsite OGC standards-based components. Assistance will include financial contributions for labour, software, and data publishing. The improvements will allow providers to maintain control over the data they own while contributing at the same time to a national view of that data. Project results will aid Canadian Council on Geomatics (CCOG) members in planning the future implementation of a distributed architecture for GeoBase, a federal, provincial and territorial government initiative.

The OGC® is an international industry consortium of more than 335 companies, government agencies, research organizations, and universities participating in a consensus process to develop publicly available interface specifications. OpenGIS® Specifications support interoperable solutions that "geo-enable" the Web, wireless and location-based services, and mainstream IT. The specifications empower technology developers to make complex spatial information and services accessible and useful with all kinds of applications.
