New booklet celebrates the success of two UK Government IT projects

London, UK, 9 May 2007 - The UK's Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) and Intelligent Addressing, the UK address and data management specialist, have published a new booklet which celebrates the success of two Government IT projects, the NLPG (National Land and Property Gazetteer) and the NSG (National Street Gazetteer). The continued success of these projects is proof positive that not all Government IT initiatives are set to flounder, quite the reverse in fact, standing out as beacons for public-private partnership, where local knowledge and endeavour are combined and made accessible at a national level.

The booklet includes a series of case studies which focus on the winners of the 2006 Exemplar Awards, highlighting how these projects deliver better services to citizens, save money and facilitate transformational government. The new booklet can be viewed online at:

Since 1999, the Improvement and Development Agency (IDeA) has worked in partnership with Intelligent Addressing Ltd and Local Government address managers to produce what is now the definitive index of all buildings, including those in multiple occupation, with a nationally Unique Property Reference Number (UPRN). Since service provision is associated with an address the NLPG facilitates a citizen centric approach. Local government has invested in this creation, which is driven by their own internal business need for current and accurate address information with virtually all of the 376 councils in England and Wales contributing information to the NLPG at regular intervals.

The quality of the NLPG has been enriched by a sister project, the National Street Gazetteer (NSG) which has been compiled from over 970,000 street submissions from every highway authority and is the only centrally maintained street database that conforms to the British Standard.

“Much has been said about the difficulties of the public sector in implementing successful information and IT infrastructure projects. But IDeA is delighted to be associated with two projects, which are successfully demonstrating their value to our local government community and the communities they serve. We are therefore equally pleased to support the Exemplar Awards given in recognition of outstanding performance by local gazetteer custodians; this booklet celebrates their success,” said Lucy De Groot, Executive Director, Improvement and Development Agency.

“We can talk long and loud about the improved accuracy and currency of the gazetteer data and the efficacy of bottom up and top down processes but actually it is the benefits that accrue both locally and nationally that really matter” said Michael Nicholson, Managing Director of Intelligent Addressing. “This booklet demonstrates how far Local Authorities have come in joining up their internal processes to improve service provision. Our central position within this information infrastructure means we are well placed to see this growing confidence being realised in a number of innovative ways, which are covered in the new booklet. These stretch from Public Service access through the Internet and Digital TV to Call Centres and One-Stop Shops. Meanwhile the NSG has moved from strength to strength, which means that we now have an accurate and up to date picture of the both the nation’s road infrastructure and all the properties which it links, no mean achievement,” continued Michael Nicholson.
