Lancaster, Pennsylvania (January 11, 2008) – An article entitled “Animating Floods in 3-D” appears in the November/December 2007 edition of the Earth Imaging Journal. The article, written by Mr. Andrew Ross, Senior GIS Analyst at geographIT, is one of three articles focusing on product innovations providing real-world mapping solutions. This article describes animation techniques developed by geographIT in support of the North Carolina Chapter of the Nature Conservancy’s environmental monitoring and management activities within the Lower Roanoke River Basin. This technique uses the ArcScene commercial software package by ESRI ( www.esri.com) to create animations depicting the advance and retreat of flood waters under various flood model scenarios. The flood animation can be viewed in 3 dimensions from stationary as well as moving (fly-through) vantage points. The flood model data is provided by RRBROM (Roanoke River Basin Reservoir Operations Model) software developed by Hydrologics ( www.hydrologics.net).
