Leuven, Belgium, 10 June, 2008 - Luciad, the leading software provider for high performance visualization of geospatial information, has signed an important contract for the development of a SUA (Special Use Airspace) editor with the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), the agency responsible for the safety of civil aviation in the United States. The system will support AIXM 5, the new global aeronautical data interchange standard.
The FAA has awarded a contract to Luciad to prototype a web-based editor for special use airspaces (SUAs). This contract builds on Luciad’s proven track record of providing software solutions to large system integrators and Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs).
The FAA currently uses a variety of systems to manage SUAs and Air Traffic Control Assigned Airspaces (ATCAAs), airspaces set aside for military and other types of training exercises. As part of a System-Wide Information Management (SWIM) project, the FAA sought a web-enabled solution that enables users to add data to the static SUA and ATCAA repository and communicate status changes to those airspaces to the operational systems in an Aeronautical Information Exchange Model (AIXM) format.
To build its prototype, the FAA purchased LuciadMap, Luciad’s out-of-the-box software platform for ATC/ATM, extended with the Lucy application component. LuciadMap offers the unique ability to combine geographic data from different data sources into one coherent view, and the world’s first available commercial implementation of AIXM 5, the new global Aeronautical Information Exchange Model standard defined jointly by the FAA and Eurocontrol. Next to this, LuciadMap comes with geodetic 2D capabilities and offers flexible deployment using a web browser interface.
The FAA’s Aeronautical Information Management group selected Luciad because Luciad is a mature company with a significant user base, offering a full-featured software suite to easily develop rich user interfaces with a full geographic information system that utilizes AIXM. The SUA editor will enable the FAA to manage SUA information digitally and promote more efficient airspace management by enabling the FAA to exchange SUA information with ATC systems and customers.
“We are proud to have been selected by the FAA as the only provider meeting all stringent criteria for the SUA editor,” said Lode Missiaen, Luciad’s CEO. “With this relationship, Luciad strengthens its position in the US market and builds on its global track record for providing high performance visualization software to the major Air Navigation Service Providers.”
About the Federal Aviation Administration
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), an agency of the United States Department of Transportation, is primarily responsible for the advancement, safety and regulation of civil aviation, as well as overseeing the development of the air traffic control system and commercial space travel.
The FAA’s Aeronautical Information Management (AIM) group is responsible for developing and operating the FAA’s official aeronautical database. The AIM organization handles collection, configuration management, processing and distribution of aeronautical information for the Federal Aviation Administration.
Luciad provides software solutions for high performance visualization of geospatial information. Luciad’s software components are the building blocks for mission-critical ATC/ATM and Air Command and Control systems.
Luciad’s core product is LuciadMap, a software solution that system integrators and original equipment manufactures can easily integrate into their existing systems. LuciadMap can handle large numbers of static and moving data on top of geographical information, including maps, satellite imagery, and terrain elevation in many different formats and references to achieve a high situational awareness.
Luciad also offers an end-user product, based on LuciadMap’s technology: ATCPlayback, a viewing capability to play back, review, and analyze simulated or recorded air traffic data. It is a powerful, user-friendly suite that graphically replays and intuitively analyzes ATC simulation results by enabling users to interactively refine the analysis process and graphically visualize the results.
Dedicated to providing its clients with the best possible service, Luciad Professional Services will assess advanced system requirements and assist system integrators with the implementation of fully integrated solutions.
Luciad’s international customer base includes Eurocontrol, FAA, Lockheed Martin, NATO, Saab, Belgocontrol, NLR, DGAC, DFS, LVNL, NATS, AENA, Skyguide, NavCanada and ENAV.
